Initiated by the curator Lotfi Aoulad through Das Relais, a platform between fashion and art, Diaspora Wonderland. Fashioning Worlds is a travelling exhibition conceived to move between the fashion capitals. At the ifa-Galerie in Berlin, it brings together five artists from diasporic communities: Buki Akomolafe, Margaux Derhy, Nix, Sarah Makharine and Sophia Kacimi.
At the heart of the project is a question: how stories travel through bodies, territories and generations, and how dressing can become a way of inhabiting one's existence. Diaspora, from the Greek speiro, to sow, is understood here as a place of creation rather than a dispersal.
Margaux Derhy presents delicately embroidered linen canvases, stretched in waves across the space. On one of them, with its bluish reflections, the silhouette of a woman on a harbour can be made out, only the contours of her face traced: her grandmother, the first in the family to leave Morocco. It is her first exhibition in Germany.
